Today's Tips Go Back
Springtime Tips

Well it is that time of year again where we prepare to meet the great outdoors. It’s time to get out the rakes, leaf bags, pruners, and other assortment of yard tools.
Start out by making sure that all the dead remains of last year’s perennials are removed from plant bases. Clear out any leftover leaves from fall that tend to collect around the base of shrubs, and plants. This will allow the new sprouts to catch the sun to get ready for this season’s show.
Work up the soil in planting beds to get some air down around the roots, and to allow moisture to absorb better into the soil.
Pull any weeds that have snuck in, and sprinkle some “Preen” throughout the beds. I swear by this mixture (also available in Frank’s Nursery version and works just as well) that prevents seeds and weeds from germinating, and keeps your beds practically weed free all season long. I sprinkle it once in the spring, and again in late July. Then if we have an extended fall, again in October. It’s hard to find in the stores after June, so buy a couple of bags in the spring and store it so you can use it as needed.
Now is a good time to plant your spring bulbs (Calla lilies, Canna lilies, Dalliahs, Gladiolas, etc.) Planting them now will give you the longest show for the summer.
Even though the weather is great, hold off on planting your annuals until after May 28. We could still get frost, and you risk loosing your plants and having to start over up until then.
If you haven’t fertilized your lawn yet, now is a food time to do so, and spread a little pre-emergent treatment.
